Jewellery repair costs on the Costa del Sol vary depending on what the piece needs, what metal it’s made from, and how complex the work is. There is no standard price list and any jeweller who quotes you without seeing the piece first is guessing. What you can expect from a reputable workshop is an honest assessment before anyone touches your jewellery, at no charge.
What affects the cost of jewellery repair?
Four things determine what a repair will cost:
The metal. Gold, silver and platinum all behave differently and require different tools and techniques. Platinum is the most demanding to work with and typically the most expensive to repair.
The type of repair. Resizing a ring is a different job to resetting a loose stone, which is a different job to soldering a link. Each has its own process and time requirement.
The complexity. A plain gold band is straightforward. A ring with pavé-set stones around the shank, or a piece with intricate filigree work, takes longer and requires more skill to do without damage.
Whether stones are involved. If a stone needs to be taken out and put back in safely, it adds time and care to the job, particularly with older settings or fragile gems.
Common repairs and what they involve
Ring resizing means adding or removing metal from the band, then refinishing the piece so the join is invisible. Going up is generally more straightforward than going down. Rings with stones set around the full band require extra care to avoid disturbing the settings.
Stones reset work loose over time; prongs wear down, settings shift. Resetting involves checking every prong or bezel, securing the stone, and ensuring it is safe for daily wear. It is one of the most common repairs we do, and one of the most worth doing before a stone is lost entirely.
Rhodium plating white gold is naturally a yellowish-grey. The bright white finish comes from a rhodium coating that wears down with time. Replating restores the original look and adds a layer of protection. Most white gold pieces benefit from replating every few years depending on how often they’re worn. And there is an entire process behind it so your jewel, especially a ring, looks like new again.
Broken chains, clasps and links: A snapped chain or a clasp that no longer holds is a relatively quick repair when done properly. The join should be clean and strong, not a temporary fix that breaks again in six months.
Polishing and professional cleaning daily wear leave their mark. Diamonds love grease and look dull with every cream, powder etc you put on. Professional cleaning removes tarnish and build-up that home cleaning can’t reach. Polishing removes surface scratches and restores the original finish. It is also a good moment to check that everything else is in order.
Why we don't quote without seeing the piece
A photo tells us something. Seeing the piece in person tells us everything.
When you bring your jewellery into our workshop, Juan Carlos looks at it properly, under light, with the right tools. He can see what a photo can’t show: the condition of the metal, the state of the settings, whether there is underlying damage that affects the work needed.
That is why our assessment is always in person, and always free. The quote you receive is based on what the piece actually needs, not on a best guess from a description.
It also means no surprises. You know exactly what the work involves and what it will cost before we begin.
Frequently asked questions
Is the initial assessment free? Yes, always. We look at the piece together, tell you what it needs and what it will cost, and there’s no charge for that conversation. If you decide not to proceed, no problem.
Do you repair all types of jewellery? We work with gold, silver and platinum. We don’t repair costume/fashion jewellery or bijouterie, not because we are precious about it. Those pieces require different materials and processes, and we’d rather be honest about what we do well.
Can you give me a price from a photo? We can give you a general sense of what may be involved, and if a repair may be possible, but we won’t provide a quote without seeing the piece. A photo doesn’t show us the condition of the metal, the state of the settings, or whether there’s anything else that needs attention. Coming in is always worth it.
How long does a repair take? Simple repairs can often be done within a few days. More complex restorations take longer. We will give you a realistic timeframe when we see the piece, and we keep you updated throughout.
