For lovers of fine jewellery, December’s birthstones offer a captivating blend of luxury and meaning. Whether you’re seeking a personal treasure or the perfect gift, these gems hold the power to connect you to centuries of culture, tradition, and artistry. Let’s explore the timeless appeal and myths behind these dazzling stones and discover what makes them so special for December-born and you.
Tanzanite - The Stone of Transformation
Let´s start with the so called “youngest” of December’s gemstones yet one of the most captivating. It got added to the jewellery industry’s official birthstone list in 2002. Yes, you guessed it, it is Tanzanite. Its deep blue-violet colours, unlike any other gemstone, are highly prized in the world of fine jewellery.
Cultural Significance
Tanzanite, a gem of extraordinary beauty, is unique not only for its vivid blue-violet hues but also for its fascinating origins. Discovered in 1967 near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, this gem owes its name and fame to its exclusivity; it is mined only in a small, 4-square-mile region in northern Tanzania.
So Tanzanite is named after the country Tanzania, the only place on Earth where it is found. The Maasai people of this region view the stone as a symbol of life and new beginnings. Traditionally, it is gifted to celebrate childbirth or important life transitions, reflecting its connection to transformation and intuition.
Symbolism
Often associated with awakening and spiritual enlightenment, Tanzanite is believed to help wearers discover their true selves. Its dual tones of blue and violet signify the balance between logic and intuition—a perfect metaphor for personal growth.
Additionally, tanzanite is often chosen to commemorate the 24th wedding anniversary, symbolizing the enduring beauty and rarity of a long-lasting relationship.
Would you have known?
The Gem was originally mistaken for sapphire. However, Tanzanite was introduced to the world by Tiffany & Co. in 1967, who rebranded it after its country of origin. They declared it “the most beautiful blue stone to be discovered in 2,000 years,” elevating it to instant fame in the world of fine jewellery
In Fine Jewellery
Jewellery artisans value Tanzanite for its rarity and vibrant colour. Whether set in white gold rings or paired with diamonds in elegant necklaces, this gemstone transforms any piece into a showstopper. For December born, Tanzanite captures the essence of the beautiful season which is luxurious, rare, and deeply meaningful. We have the honour to repair a stunning tanzanite pendant.
Blue Topaz - The Gem of Serenity and Clarity
The next December gem I would like you to know about is the Blue Topaz. It stands as a symbol of sophistication and brilliance, renowned for its captivating colours ranging from the delicate tones of pale sky to the vivid depths of Swiss blue. While its affordability might suggest accessibility, this gemstone has long been consolidated royalty, prestige, and timeless allure, holding its own against pricier stones like sapphires.
Historical and Cultural Significance
Topaz has a storied history, with its name believed to be from the Sanskrit word tapas, meaning “fire,” or the ancient Greek island of Topazios (modern-day Zabargad), famous for its gemstone deposits. Historically, Topaz of all colours was revered, but blue Topaz emerged as a standout in the Victorian era. Its icy elegance resonated with royal tastes, adorning pieces crafted for aristocratic collections.
A noteworthy example of Topaz’s prominence in royal circles is the “Braganza Diamond,” part of the Portuguese Crown Jewels, which was long believed to be a massive diamond but is now thought to be an enormous colorless Topaz. While not blue, this demonstrates the gemstone’s historic association with glory. Totally fascinating that they doubt the diamond and investigated, woud you agree?
Additionally, Russian Empresses favoured Imperial Topaz in their collections, adding to the legacy of its regal allure
Symbolism
Blue Topaz embodies serenity and clarity, making it a fitting gemstone for the reflective energy of December. Its tranquil tones are thought to sooth the mind, enhance communication, and inspire creativity. For centuries, it has been gifted to symbolize love, loyalty, and new beginnings, making it a perfect token for those embarking on life’s next chapter
You might have read my November blog where the Topaz is named as one of the birthstones. Just to put is into a brief Historical Context
Topaz, in its broader classification, has been associated with November due to its rich golden colours and warming tones, resonating with the autumnal season in the Northern Hemisphere. The golden and orange varieties of Topaz align with the warm, harvest-like ambiance of November.
In contrast, Blue Topaz gained its association with December because of its cool, tranquil blue tones, which mirror the wintry skies and frosty landscapes often associated with the final month of the year.
One of the Artisans Favourite
Blue Topaz is celebrated for its affordability and brilliance, offering a more economical, and beautiful in colour variety alternative to pricier blue gemstones like sapphires. We love its versatility—it can be cut into various shapes and set in everything from minimalist necklaces to elaborate cocktail rings. Whether paired with white gold for a modern look or rose gold for a vintage charm, Blue Topaz adds sophistication to any jewellery piece.
