One popular legend suggests that Valentine was a Roman priest during the third century AD, serving during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. According to this story, Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men, believing that single men made better soldiers. Valentine defied this decree and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When his actions were discovered, Valentine was arrested and eventually executed on February 14th, around the year 270 AD.
